Intentions: A New Perspective for the New Year

As a new year unfolds, many of us feel the pressure to set big, measurable goals that promise transformation and success. But what if the traditional "goal-setting" approach doesn’t align with where you are in life right now? Enter intentions, a gentler and more flexible way to guide your actions and focus throughout the year.

The Difference Between the Two? Goals are specific and measurable outcomes and focus on achievements and results. Intentions, on the other hand, are about how you want to feel or the values you want to live by as you navigate the year. They’re not tied to an outcome but rather to your mindset and daily actions. While goals look outward at specific destinations, intentions focus inward, grounding you in the present moment and helping you enjoy the journey.

For me, setting intentions over goals feels more natural, especially if you’re at a stage where life is more about balance, mindfulness, and personal fulfillment than hitting strict benchmarks. Intentions allow for flexibility and creativity—they’re a compass rather than a map. Intentions also help you build consistency and create habits that align with your values. By focusing on how you want to be, rather than what you want to achieve, you can make every moment meaningful without the stress of falling short of a target.

How to Set Intentions

Reflect on What Matters:  Think about what’s truly important to you. What values, relationships, or activities bring you joy, peace, or fulfillment?

Write Your Intentions:  Phrase your intentions as positive affirmations or guiding principles. For instance:  “I intend to nurture my relationship with Jeff.”  “I intend to improve my health and wellness. ”I intend to have a harmonious home.”

Keep It Simple:  Unlike goals, intentions don’t need to be long or detailed. Choose a few core intentions that resonate with you and feel manageable.

Revisit and Adjust: Life is dynamic, and your intentions can evolve. Check in with yourself regularly—weekly or monthly—to reflect on how your intentions are shaping your days.

Should we abandon goals?  Not completely.  Work is the place where I will have measurable goals, as I'm sure my boss would not prefer to hear, "I will intend to finish XYZ project when I can."  🤣

This year, where it feels right, give yourself the gift of intention. By focusing on how you want to live and feel, you might just find that you achieve more than you imagined—not through rigid planning, but through mindful, meaningful action.

Book Review: Women Living Deliciously

Women Living Deliciously by Florence Given is part memoir, part manifesto, encouraging us to drop the hustle for approval and instead embrace beauty, pleasure, intuition, and power on our own terms . The book isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It affirmed what I’m learning on my journey: that living fully doesn’t mean waiting for the “big” moments, but delighting in the details and giving ourselves permission to rewrite old scripts. It’s a celebration of reclaiming our joy and choosing to live with bold softness. My Takeaways I’m learning to value my own opinion of myself—to believe that it counts, even if no one else validates it. It’s easy to outsource our power—letting others decide what’s best or silencing our own intuition—but I’m choosing to come home to myself. I am not the noise in my mind. I am the one who hears it, and I get to choose how I respond. Joy lives in the everyday. If I wait for the weekend or retirement to rest and enjoy my life, I’ll miss ...

The Art of Discernment: A Leadership Skill That Should Be Mastered

When we think of leadership, we often picture decisiveness, vision, and strategy. But there’s one underrated skill that sets exceptional leaders apart: discernment. As Hailey Bouche,  Associate Editor, in her  The Everygirl article points out, discernment is the ability to evaluate situations thoughtfully, weigh options, and make sound decisions—often without all the answers in front of you. It’s a skill rooted in self-awareness, empathy, and critical thinking, and it’s essential for thriving in both professional and personal life. So why is discernment so vital? For leaders, it’s the bridge between action and intention. While making a quick decision may seem like a hallmark of confidence, true discernment means knowing when to pause, reflect, and trust your instincts . It’s about sifting through noise to focus on what truly matters, whether that’s the needs of a team, the nuances of a relationship, or the direction of a project. The article highlights practical ways to build ...
