Book Review: The Unwritten Rules of Magic

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the chance to read this unforgettable story.  While reading the book, I couldn’t help but wonder if I would have had Emerson’s courage.  And Harper Ross, the author of this book, I loved the note to the reader.

The Unwritten Rules of Magic is far more than a story about supernatural wishes — it’s a beautifully layered reflection on family, grief, and the way we try to rewrite the painful parts of our lives.

What stood out most to me were the themes woven through every chapter: how secrets can shape generations, and how healing often begins when we stop trying to control everything and start accepting what is. The story reveals how our desire to “fix” life can sometimes blur what truly matters and distance us from the people we love most.

The author captures the ache of watching a parent fade, the complexity of motherhood, and the courage it takes to forgive — ourselves and others. It’s heartfelt, thoughtful, and filled with quiet revelations.

A beautifully written book that reminds us that life’s real magic lies in connection, understanding, and letting go.

Book Review: Women Living Deliciously

Women Living Deliciously by Florence Given is part memoir, part manifesto, encouraging us to drop the hustle for approval and instead embrace beauty, pleasure, intuition, and power on our own terms . The book isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It affirmed what I’m learning on my journey: that living fully doesn’t mean waiting for the “big” moments, but delighting in the details and giving ourselves permission to rewrite old scripts. It’s a celebration of reclaiming our joy and choosing to live with bold softness. My Takeaways I’m learning to value my own opinion of myself—to believe that it counts, even if no one else validates it. It’s easy to outsource our power—letting others decide what’s best or silencing our own intuition—but I’m choosing to come home to myself. I am not the noise in my mind. I am the one who hears it, and I get to choose how I respond. Joy lives in the everyday. If I wait for the weekend or retirement to rest and enjoy my life, I’ll miss ...

Book Review: Destination Simple: Everyday Rituals for a Slower Life

As I continue to learn more about slow living, I came across the book Destination Simple: Everyday Rituals for a Slower Life by Brooke McAlary—a book so small in size yet packed with powerful insights. It distills slow living into its simplest form, offering practical ways to create a life that feels more intentional and present.   The book is structured into three key sections: Rituals – Five foundational habits to anchor your days.   Rhythms – Establishing morning and evening routines to create flow.   Checking In – Letting go of the myth of perfect balance and embracing "tilting."   One concept that really stood out to me was tilting : the idea that life isn’t about maintaining a perfect balance at all times. Instead, it’s about shifting energy where it’s needed most and accepting that some areas of life will naturally take priority over others at different times .   McAlary explains it well:   Tilting is about being aware...

Lavendaire: Artist of Life Workbook

I discovered the Lavendaire YouTube channel about five years ago, and it quickly became a go-to source for personal growth and lifestyle inspiration. The channel covers topics like self-development, intentional living, self-love, meditation, and so much more. Aileene, the host, has also created The Artist of Life Workbook , a guided journal designed to help you craft your most intentional and successful year. This workbook, along with tools like ChatGPT, has played a key role in helping me shape my goals. Its thoughtful exercises have not only affirmed and refined my understanding of who I am but have also clarified what I truly want in life. Plus, the workbook keeps me accountable with weekly action pages and monthly reflections. It’s been an invaluable tool in my personal journey! Under the philosophy of slow living, it took me three thoughtful months to work through the exercises and refine my goals. This patient, deliberate approach allowed me to make meaningful progress and, at la...
